Trim Levels Exterior
The 2016 4Runner has six trim levels. In order of starting MSRP, they are the SR5 ($33,810), SR5 Premium ($36,490), Trail ($36,715), Trail Premium ($39,395), TRD PRO ($41,850), and Limited ($42,125). These trim levels and the options within are mostly unchanged from the 2015 model. Trail and Trail Premium models have a hood scoop and higher ground clearance, while the TRD PRO is unstoppable, and the Limited has all the power with a splash of luxury.

On the outside, the 2016 model has a few enhancements that give the front an even more assertive look. The unusual headlight recesses stand out, but for those who want a more traditional appearance, the Limited trim level has a more balanced appearance and a thick chrome bar over the grille.
Engine Power
Keeping it simple, the 2016 4Runner has only one engine: a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. With two-wheel drive the 4Runner gets 17/22 city/highway miles per gallon, and with all-wheel drive, the highway mpg lowers only by one, for 17/21. The five-speed automatic transmission is smooth, predictable, and should keep most drivers confident.
Performance
Despite its formidable size, the 4Runner's powerful engine and smart engineering keep it dependable in city and highway driving. Over natural terrain, the 4Runner comes to life and can easily tackle camping trips, sandy beaches, and more. Bumpy terrain is fun to drive over, rather than uncomfortable or shaky in less capable SUVs.
Interior
Though most models have two seat rows, a third is optional, increasing the total seats to seven. As for technology, one of the updates for 2016 is the new Entune 2.5. This updated infotainment system adds cell phone navigation streamed to the head unit, and includes Siri Eyes Free functionality for iPhones.

Bluetooth streaming and an eight-way power driver's seat are also standard in the base model. Moving up to the all-wheel drive Trail and TRD trims, drivers get water-resistant seats, multi-terrain select, and other welcome features. If you want a 4Runner too nice to get dirty, the Limited emphasizes classy features like heated and ventilated leather seating, a more powerful sound system, and a moonroof.
Safety Features
The 2016 4Runner earned a rating of five stars out of five for most of its NHTSA crash tests. Safety staples like electronic stability control and traction control are all present, and modern features like tire pressure monitoring and a rear-view camera are standard. The Limited exclusively comes with a SafetyConnect package, combining emergency and roadside assistance, stolen vehicle tracking, and other subscription features, with one year's service included.
