Trim Levels Exterior
Like other 2016 Toyota models, the Highlander has six trim levels. In order of starting price, they are the LE ($29,990), LE V6 ($31,515), LE Plus V6 ($33,895), XLE V6 ($36,815), Limited V6 ($40,415), and Limited Platinum V6 ($43,030). The base trim is great for drivers who don't desire the added power from the V6, while higher trims use the V6 and raise the features to more luxurious levels.

The sharp headlights and sleek form reduce the 2016 Highlander's height, which makes it look fast and separates it well from bulky minivan territory. Toyota claims the changes were made to attract more male drivers, but the result is a balance that should please everyone.
Engine Power
The base LE trim gets a 2.7-liter I-4 engine with 185 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, and a city/highway fuel economy of 20/25 miles per gallon. Every trim level above the base uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 270 horsepower, 248 lb-ft of torque, and nearly identical fuel economy. Lastly, there are hybrid models that use the same 3.5-liter V6 with two 65-volt AC motors. This slightly increases the horsepower to 280 and provides a superior fuel economy of 27/28 city/highway mpg.
Performance
The base I-4 engine is sufficient to keep the Highlander moving well at lower speeds and will suit drivers who don't need excess towing power or sudden acceleration. The V6 is a worthy upgrade for many, as it pushes the heavy frame into higher gears faster, and keeps it competitive with many smaller vehicles on the highway. The 2016 Highlander can be either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, and with AWD, the Highlander has the grip for minor off-road paths. Clearance is also improved, thanks to the lower roof.
Interior
The 2016 Highlander's interior is spacious, comfortable, and convenient. The large center console storage space is great for keeping snacks on a long family road trip, and the controls up front are all easy to reach and use, for the driver or passenger. At base, drivers will get advanced tech like a rearview backup camera, 12-volt auxiliary power outlets, and an Entune infotainment system with Bluetooth and voice recognition. Like with other modern Toyota SUVs, higher trims add comfort and enjoyment options like a moonroof, or second-row captain's chairs.
Safety Features
The Highlander earned a five out of five rating from the NHTSA in 2016. Standard features include a glass breakage sensor, stability and traction control, child seat anchors, and a host of airbags. Higher trim levels add the latest in advanced active security features, like lane departure warnings.
