Trim Levels Exterior
The 2016 RAV4 can be in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and comes in four trim levels: the LE (starting at $24,350), XLE (starting at $26,270), SE (starting at $29,265), and Limited (starting at $31,510). For 2016, the SE now has a S-Code Paint Treatment package for a more striking appearance.

The LE has roof rails standard, the XLE adds a power liftgate, the SE adds heated front seats, and the Limited has it all, including 18-inch five-spoke SuperChrome alloy wheels. Among all trim levels, the RAV4 looks modern without looking flimsy. New aggressive lines in the sculpting make it one of the best looking compact SUVs around.
Engine Power
The RAV4 has one gas engine and one hybrid power train, using the same gas engine with two electric motors. Most 2016 RAV4s will use the 2.5-liter I-4 alone, with 176 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. With this setup, drivers can expect a maximum fuel economy of 24/31 city/highway miles per gallon. Hybrid RAV4 models will get an increase in power from the electric motors, bumping the horsepower to 194 and the torque to 206 lb-ft. It naturally increases the city fuel economy as well, for a combination of 34/31 city/highway mpg.
Performance
Reliable and comfortable, the base RAV4 will satisfy most drivers' needs, with the agility to handle sharp curves at high or low speeds. It has a 0-60 acceleration below 10 seconds and can tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. Gasoline power trains use a six-speed automatic transmission that's comfortable and balanced from gear to gear. The hybrid RAV4 gets a continuously variable transmission with a similar performance.
Interior
On the inside, the 2016 RAV4 manages to be upscale and welcoming, even at the base LE trim level. Instead of leather, higher trims and options add Softex, a very similar material that provides the same smooth feel and pleasant shine. The space is good all around for passengers in the front or back, and the cargo space has 38.4 cubic feet.

All models get at least a 6.1-inch infotainment screen and Entune system. One of the best new features for 2016 is the 360 Bird's Eye View parking system. For the best driver comfort, the Limited model adds lumbar support to the seat.
Safety Features
The RAV4 earned a five out of five stars total from the NHTSA crash tests. The safety features are advanced, and most are included among every trim. A pre-collision safety system is included in some of the higher trims only, but in all cases drivers will have passenger-sensing smart airbags, turn signal mirrors, and collision prevention features like electronic stability control.
