The area offers not only traditional gyms but also a wide range of indoor and outdoor classes and activities.

1. Square Dance at Springbrook Recreation Center

Did you know that square dancing is great for both your heart health and memory? With the variable, energetic movements, an hour of dancing can burn 250-400 calories. What’s more, it’s a low-impact form of exercise, so you won’t put any of your joints at risk.

Springbrook Recreation Center offers weekly adult Western Square Dance classes. People who prefer to work out alone can rent the center for private sessions or drop in during the opening hours from 3.00-5.00pm Monday through Friday. The recreation center provides a gym, pool tables and meeting rooms.

2. Blow Off Steam at Smoky Mountain Axe House

If you’re looking for a way to blow off steam, axe throwing could be the perfect sport for you. At Smoky Mountain Axe House, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a seasoned axe thrower or a beginner, because each of their five lanes has an Axe Coach to make sure you are participating in the sport safely.

The Axe House hosts events for all sizes, but small groups can walk in without a booking. All ages are allowed to participate, so you can take your whole family on this unusual adventure.

3. Head to John Sevier Park for a Variety of Outdoor Sports

This 8-acre park is the ideal location for outdoor exercise. With tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, two pools and a playground for younger visitors, you won’t be stuck for activities here. While you can work out on your own or with your family, there are also group sessions available. For example, adult tennis classes and leagues are offered every weekday, and pickleball classes are available on Tuesday evenings.

4. Join the Run 4 Fun Local Running Group

Located at Pearson Springs Park Pavilion and Maryville Greenway, this running club is suitable for adults and supervised children 12 and up. You can start at the beginner level, which is a 10-week training program designed to help you achieve your first 5K race. Not only does the group practice running, but abdominal workouts, cool-downs and information on injury prevention and nutrition are included in the membership.

More seasoned runners can participate in the intermediate level course, which teaches you more advanced running techniques like good form and pacing. With such an inclusive and welcoming local group, there’s no excuse not to go for a run!

Whether you prefer to throw an axe or run a 5K, you can find a workout in the local area that will inspire you to stay in shape.
