Comfortable Driving Tips in Alcoa, TNWhether you’re an everyday commuter or frequently take long car trips, having a comfortable drive can make all the difference. No one likes having a stiff and sore back after a drive, but luckily there are a few ways to avoid this discomfort.  Here are four ways you can help improve your positioning and therefore reduce aches and pains.

Change the Seat Back

If your seat back is too far reclined or upright, it can shift the pressure on your back, specifically causing pain in your lumbar region. In order to reduce this, try to adjust your seat until it tilts at about 100 degrees, or slightly back from completely vertical. Not only does this help remove some of the pressure from your back, it should also position you so that you can easily see over your wheel and dashboard without craning your neck or slouching down.

Just changing the seat position isn’t enough though. Slouching is common when driving, and bad posture not only makes driving more uncomfortable, it also can lead to future issues down the road. Try to keep your chin up and your spine stacked without jutting your head forward or curving your shoulders in. It may take some getting used to, but you’ll feel way better down the line.

Bolsters

As previously mentioned, your lumbar region is often the center of car-associated back pain. While some vehicles offer customizable lumbar support, most don’t. If your vehicle doesn’t, consider purchasing a bolster. These are inserted between your back and seat and provide extra support. Your lumbar is where your spine starts to curve at the base. We prefer memory foam pillows as they easily conform to your back and provide easily customizable support.

Adjust the Seat Position

Next, consider adjusting the height and forward position of your seat. You should have your knees just slightly bent enough that they aren’t bumping the wheel and allow you to depress the gas pedal without stretching too far. Your height should allow you to see clearly over the wheel and dashboard without any extra effort. In addition, you should have about two fingers space between your knees and the seat edge for maximum support and comfort.

Seat Covers

If you still aren’t feeling comfortable, you should consider buying new seat covers. Many older vehicles have seats that have collapsed support, which means your body doesn’t have optimum alignment. Memory foam covers not only offer extra support, they’re also extremely comfortable and can mold to your body and positioning to give you the extra boost that your seats may not offer. If you live in a colder area, faux sheepskin covers are a popular alternative. They’re extra soft and warm and are a great way to stay cozy on long car trips during colder weather.

These are just a few ways to help you improve your comfort and your overall physical well-being. With just a few simple adjustments, you’ll find that you’ve eliminated the aches and pains associated with long drives without adequate support.
