Located just 15 miles south of Knoxville, the city of Alcoa, TN is surrounded by lakes and rivers, making it an excellent base for anglers wanting to fish without driving too far. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, there are several fishing spots you can reach in less than an hour to enjoy a weekend surrounded by nature and catching some of the area’s most common specimens of fish.
1. Fort Loudoun Lake
One of the most popular weekend destinations for visitors from Louisville, Knoxville, and Alcoa, Fort Loudoun Lake is an excellent spot for anglers thanks to its main channel, which is full of fish migrating through the current. While there are some popular designated fishing areas, the lake is also full of different structures, including trees and docks, which have become the habitat of different fish species and attract tenths of anglers every day.
Some of the most popular specimens that can be found at Fort Loudoun Lake include bluegill, catfish, white bass, walleye, and sauger. Apart from fishing, the place offers a plethora of recreational activities, including boating, birdwatching, and picnicking. Getting here from downtown Alcoa takes a little under 25 minutes by car, following route I-140 W. Fort Loudoun Lake does not charge an admission fee for visitors, although there is a donation box at the entrance.
2. Norris Lake
Although getting to Norris Lake from downtown Alcoa takes a little under two hours by car, the drive is totally worth it. Surrounded by mountains, this lake offers more than 800 miles of shoreline and pristine waters that make up a real angler’s paradise in northern Tennessee. This natural escape is highly popular among visitors from Knoxville and other nearby cities across the state line in Kentucky, who come here to enjoy some fresh air and stunning views.
From Alcoa, the easiest way to get to Norris Lake is driving north along route TN-33 N. Once you get to the entrance of the state park, you will have to pay an admission fee of $5 per person. As with most other fishing areas in the state, you will need a permit, which can be obtained at the park office, the marina, and several gas stations in the surrounding areas.
3. Cherokee Lake
An excellent spot to fish smallmouth and largemouth specimens, Cherokee Lake, is located less than 50 miles northeast of downtown Alcoa. This artificial water reservoir was formed by the impoundment of the Holston River in the 1940s and has since become a popular getaway destination for visitors from all over the state. Featuring clear waters and more than 400 miles of shoreline, it is a great place for anglers, as well as for groups of friends and families.
