At Rick McGill’s Airport Toyota, we pride ourselves on being pillars of our community in Alcoa and Blount County. That’s why we’re excited to share news about the development of a $200 million Amazon Fulfillment Center in our area, and that it’s bringing positive economic changes.
On February 3, 2021, an announcement was made by Amazon sharing that they were excited to be opening their eighth fulfillment center in the state of Tennessee and that it would be located in Alcoa. That same day, in a press conference, Blount County Mayor Ed Mitchell stated, “I think this announcement today that Amazon’s here, I think we won the Super Bowl today.”
Originally referred to as “Project Pearl” in the region, the project was approved by the Alcoa Municipal/Regional Planning Commission in October of 2020. Since that time, it has been identified that Amazon would be the internet retailer that was building the fulfillment center, which will utilize high-tech robotics technology. The new fulfillment center is slated to bring an additional 800 jobs to this part of East Tennessee. The project is expected to be completed in May of 2022 and the warehouse is anticipated to be in operations in October of 2022.
