War Dog Memorial Statue

If you are a lover of dogs or war memorials, you may want to stop by the University of Tennessee and find their war dog memorial. The memorial was donated to the university’s Veterinary Medicine faculty in 1998. This memorial is a replica of the official one in Guam and has a Doberman pincer on top of the memorial. On the face of the memorial are names of dogs that were lost in the war so visitors can remember those that served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II as sentries, messengers, and scouts. The statue is located at 2407 River Drive, Knoxville.

Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge was a secret city that was built to house the thousands of employees who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. The city went from 3,000 residents to 75,000 within three years. While workers were quarantined in the city with guard towers and a giant perimeter fence, they still had a wide variety of activities to enjoy such as grocery stores, a library, swimming, swing dancing, and an orchestra. Almost no one in the city knew that they were making atomic bombs. Two years after World War II ended, the city was opened to civilians. You can still see some guard towers today on the edges of the city.

While in Oak Ridge, you can visit the Children’s museum to see a B-1 Flat top home, which was one of the prefab homes that were built to house the workers. The houses were designed so they could be easily transported and fit together like Lego.

There are also more places you can visit in Oak Ridge that are related to the Manhattan Project if you are interested in learning more about the city and project.
