Supra duhAfter last month’s unveiling of the 2020 GR Supra and the stir over the pinball-themed Super Bowl commercial that you can check out here, it has been announced that Toyota will use the Osaka Auto Messe to introduce to the public the GR Supra Performance Line concept from TRD. It’s set to debut on February 9th at 9:30 AM local time, and excitement has really been mounting among fans as this has been truly one of the most awaited auto releases of the decade. Claiming avidly that it is absolutely time for a comeback, Toyota spokespeople also claimed that pulses will run understandably high, and that the spirit of the original Supra basked in the “born in order to win” attitude.

You can watch a teaser video here that features the 3000 GT as well as a few souped-up race cars that competed in the Japan GT Championship. There is also a new sketch of the concept out there to chew on, and if you look closely it seems to suggest that the model will have a very large rear wing, and a ventilated hood that is a bit like what is seen on the Supra 3000 GT. Even though many of the juiciest details have been kept under wraps, the concept could also preview an assortment of TRD components, and some of the first things you notice on the exterior are the aggressive front spoiler, brand new diffuser, and aerodynamic side skirts.

To tailor the Supra to your liking, you can also buy a sports exhaust system, rear spoiler, and various fins to deck out this aggressive and sportily-stanced beast. When it comes to a work of art such as this, there are many questions about what can be added on the performance front. 86 customers will have the opportunity to obtain a strut tower brace, beefier brakes, and more lightweight aluminum wheels. Instead of what Car and Driver calls “the herculean 2JZ,” the new A90 generation receives a version of BMW’s B58 turbocharged and direct-injected 3.0-liter inline-six that generates 335 horsepower, and 365 lb-ft of torque.

Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has admitted that a 4-cylinder version will arrive on the scene later, and the only transmission currently offered is the ZF 8-speed gearbox. Admittedly, most of the real mechanical substance in the car comes from BMW’s extensive parts allotment. Most of the structural duty is taken care of by unitized steel stampings, numerous body panels, and the hood and door skins are composed of aluminum, with the rear hatch being constructed from composite material.

The styling is absolutely 100 percent Toyota, with the partnership with BMW delivering up the finished product on platform and powertrains. Initially, this massive machine of wonderment will be delivered with 19-inch wheels sporting Michelin Pilot Sport summer tires, and a little while after launch, 18-inch wheels will become standard. We love how there is some old-school Supra element present in the A90’s headlight and front-fender, but there is also a bit of Formula 1 car present in the persona of the hood. This release has had all of us here at Rick McGill admittedly as happy as one would be after winning the lottery: this arrival is bound to satisfy those who were thirsty for the satisfaction that only an engineered exercise in perfection like the Supra can provide!
