top things to do in downtown knoxvilleKnoxville, TN has a lot of historical significance in Tennessee. It was the first capital of the state, and it’s the home of several forts from the Civil War era. But it’s also a fun, family-friendly place to visit. From the cultural arts to an authentic paddlewheel boat, there’s a lot to do. Below are a few favorite places to visit.

1. Market Square Knoxville

Market Square, also known as The Square, is in the middle of downtown Knoxville, and there is no shortage of things to explore. It’s always been a place to shop and dine, but there are many more activities such as festivals and outdoor concerts. And everything is within walking distance, so no worries about transportation.

2. Knoxville Ale Trail

For the adults, this is a really fun excursion. The Knoxville Ale Trail is a map you can pick up from any of the local breweries. The map has over 20 different breweries to visit where you can get samples and have your “passport” stamped. Once it’s full, you get a coupon for a local shopping area. Just remember to always drink responsibly.

3. Knoxville Museum of Art

If you’re looking for a little culture, this museum has lots of interesting things to see. Besides the exhibitions, there are also events for families. An active kids area with art supplies and educational games is fun for all ages.

One of the main attractions at the museum is a glass sculpture by local artist Richard Jolley. It’s one of the biggest in the world and remains a permanent exhibition at the museum.

4. Knoxville Zoo

Who doesn’t love a zoo? There’s a wide array of animals that reside in their habitats at the zoo. Some of the popular ones include Chimp Ridge, Grasslands Africa, Black Bear Falls, and Gorilla Valley.

A favorite stop for the kids is the animal encounters. They can get up close and personal with the animals. There’s also a brand new experience called Bedtime with the Beasts where you can spend the night inside the zoo. That sounds both scary and fun!

5. Star of Knoxville Riverboat

You can take a cruise on the beautiful Tennessee River in an authentic paddlewheel boat. During the cruise, you’ll see Knoxville in all its glory with views of the whole city. The boat is huge and holds 235 passengers. The enclosed cabin has bars, musical events with a dance floor, and an elegant dining area.

6. Urban Wilderness

For the adventurous type, this outdoor area is a must-see. It contains five city parks, several quarries, and a wildlife area. Another highlight is 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and climbing. For history buffs, Fort Dickerson Park is an interactive Civil War park with replica cannons and other historical sites. There are many more things to see at this location, but we can’t list them all!
