why you can't miss market square in knoxville tn

Market Square Knoxville: it’s one of the most recognizable destinations in a city brimming with great attractions any time of year. Find out why this superb site should sit atop your Knoxville, TN itinerary.

Market Square Knoxville, TN: A Downtown Delight

Billed as the historic square to eat, shop, and play, Market Square is the heart of downtown Knoxville. It’s open every day and keeps around-the-clock hours, so you’ll find a vibrant atmosphere with a real community feel anytime. The Square, which extends from Union to Wall Avenue, is packed with historical significance, from farming to women’s suffrage. A remnant of the Market House for which it is named lives on in the Union Avenue bell.

On nights and weekends, you can grab a parking spot for free. With Toyota’s Advanced Parking Guidance System, intelligent computer-generated assistance, you can have help navigating those tricky downtown parking situations (such as parallel and reverse parking) like a pro.

Eat

Roughly a dozen fantastic eateries populate Market Square. For fine Southern dining, you can’t go wrong with Cafe 4. They’ve got a great wine and specialty beer menu too, as does nearby Tupelo Honey and Oliver Royale. These enticing culinary sensations get creative with Southern comfort foods and incredible cocktails. If you do indulge in alcohol, remember to drink responsibly, in moderation, and only when you’re of age. Also be sure to make alternate driving accommodations afterward.

Indulge in savory treats south of the border at Soccer Taco, or take your tastebuds overseas for Italian-themed cuisine at Emilia, Tomato Head, and Uncorked or for Japanese fusion at Kabuki. For more casual fare, your options include the Stock and Barrel, Blue Coast Grill and Bar, Myrtle’s Chicken, and retro-nostalgic Not Watson’s. And start your day off right with breakfast fare at the Market House Cafe.

Shop

The Square got its start as a farmers’ hub, and it carries on this tradition with a farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday from May until November. Regional fruits and veggies, delicious baked goods, dairy products, soothing bath and body enhancements, artisan masterpieces, and much more are available.

If you want even more one-of-a-kind souvenirs, take a shopaholics tour of the two Earths: Earthland Trading Company and Earth to Old City. Get tasty treats at the Tea Exchange. Go local and chic with Fizz jewelry and attire. Or discover a bit of everything at the Most General Store. The family fave Where’s Waldo Scavenger Hunt is a fantastic way to do downtown in style.

Play

Special events for the whole community are abundant in the Square. The Concerts on the Square and Shakespeare on the Square series deliver live performances with energetic zest, while the arts scene springs to life with the Chalk Walk and Dogwood Arts Festival. The youngest community members have fallen in love with the water play fountain and the beautiful greenspace of close-by Krutch Park.

When the sun goes down, adults come out to play at rocking live music and sports-viewing venues. Popular prime-time haunts on the Square’s lively menu include Scruffy City Hall, Tommy Trent’s, and the gemstone grotto and magic-tree-sporting Bernadette’s.
