Fun Family Activities in Alcoa, TNWhen you have children, the activities and sights that you do and see tend to be a little different. Check out these fun and exciting spots in the Alcoa and Knoxville, Tennessee, areas.

Knox County Public Library

Whether your kids are babies or pre-teens, they’ll love taking a trip to one of the branches of the Knox County Public Library system. The libraries host many free educational and fun story times for younger kids on weekdays starting at 10 a.m. Even babies can get involved at Baby Bookworms, a fun and interactive event for those up to age 2. It includes books, music, and rhymes, introducing younger kids to the excitement of reading.

You can also help prep your youngster for kindergarten at Pre-K Read and Play, a program designed specifically for those who are about to enter school for the first time. Not only does the course include literacy skills, but also science, math, and development of motor skills.

Williams-Sonoma Junior Chef Class

If you have a budding chef in your family, sign the child up for a cooking class at Williams-Sonoma in the West Town Mall. Kids in the class get to learn to prepare a variety of recipes, from snacks to main dishes, desserts to breakfast dishes. Participants also get to snack during the course.

During the fall months, Williams-Sonoma is donating a portion of the proceeds from each registration fee to benefit No Kid Hungry. The classes vary in price but some include cooking equipment that your child can bring home. Most are recommended for children ages 8 and older.

Coolsports

On a hot summer day in the Knoxville area, you can cool off while getting some exercise at Coolsports, an indoor ice skating rink. The state-of-the-art facility offers weekly times that the rink is open to the public. Admission is $9 per person, and skate rental costs an additional $4. Kids age 4 and under can get in and rent skates for $4.

If you plan to visit the rink on the first Friday of the month, get out your leg warmers and fluorescent gear because it’s ’80s night. You’ll get free skate rental if you dress up in a costume, and the best dressed individual of the night gets a four-pack of tickets to the rink.

Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge

The goal of the museum is to encourage children to learn through hands-on activities that allow them to create, solve, experience, and discover. The exhibits focus on art, history, and science, allowing visitors to learn more about the environment, other cultures, and the world that surrounds them.
