Check Out These 4 Local Art Destinations Near Alcoa, TN and Knoxville, TN

1. Knoxville Museum of Art

Designed by famous architect Edward Larrabee Barnes, this museum focuses on showcasing the rich art of the East Tennessee region. Its Higher Ground exhibition is a permanent fixture that showcases over a century’s worth of East Tennessee visual arts, including work from accomplished artists like James Cameron, Lloyd Branson, and Catherine Wiley. Numerous marble sculptures are also on display thanks to the state’s large marble industry.

As abstract expressionism became popular in the state after World War II, the many abstract interpretations of Tennessee’s beautiful landscapes by Carl Sublett and Walter Stevens are notable works at the museum.

2. Jonathan Howe Fine Art

Specializing in the impressionist style, Jonathan Howe skillfully recreates the many feelings he experienced while gazing upon Tennessee’s varied countryside. His gallery also features emotionally rich portraits that gracefully capture the human form. Visitors at the UT Medical Center can check out the walls of its lobby and halls, which regularly displays Howe’s artwork.

If you’re looking to complete your home or office decor with one of Mr. Howe’s amazing pieces, he’s happy to do commissions that nicely complement your interior design. Transporting those large commissions is no problem when your Toyota Sequoia’s versatile second- and third-row seats are folded down.

3. Broadway Studios and Gallery

Broadway Studios and Gallery boasts one of the finest collections of local contemporary art in Knoxville and is home to the studios of several artists. Viewable artwork ranges from traditional landscapes to experimental installations and sculptures. With rotating monthly exhibits, there’s always something new to see when regulars visit the gallery throughout the year. Along with high-quality artwork, you can purchase beautiful jewelry, natural handmade soap, and art books.

4. Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture

Located on the first floor of UT’s Art + Architecture building, the Ewing Gallery features artwork from undergraduate and graduate students. Its exhibitions are meant to illustrate both historical and modern attitudes in visual art and architecture. In addition to Western art, the gallery often features art from Asia, including an 18th-century woodblock print of a Japanese kabuki actor.
