First Friday Activities in Alcoa, TNKnoxville, Tennessee, has a large community of artists, cultural institutions, and arts organizations that enjoy working together and showcasing their works to encourage more residents to take part in artistic expression. The community started First Friday 13 years ago, which is a monthly celebration of art that takes place in Downtown Knoxville. With an increasing number of venues and galleries participating in First Friday, there’s always something to do or see.

ArtWalk

One of the favorite activities to take part in during the First Friday is ArtWalk, which takes place on the streets in the downtown area. Bring the whole family or get a group of friends together and stroll around, walking through galleries, studios, and collectives where artists can feature their work. Some of the performers even put on shows in the streets with live music and performance art pieces. New exhibits and artists are on display every month, so check it out on every first Friday to get the full experience.

The UT Downtown Gallery

This art gallery sits next to the Historic Emporium Building on Gay Street and showcases contemporary art pieces from professional artists from throughout the country. It’s open on First Friday each month from 5 to 9 p.m. Admission is free and serves to educate both visitors and students at the University of Tennessee about fine art and commitment to the cultural environment in this city. Some of the artists who feature their work at the museum also give lectures and talks or host workshops.

Historic Old City

Within the historic part of Old City Knoxville, you’ll find a variety of musicians putting on live shows and concerts during First Friday. Free covered parking is available under the James White Parkway, which is within a short walk from where the concerts take place. You can also enjoy the food and drink specials. Shows take place on First Friday between March and October from 6 to 8 p.m.

Dogwood Arts

Another place that supports First Friday is Dogwood Arts, located on Jackson Avenue in Old City. Artists and exhibitors at this spot show off works that honor and celebrate the natural beauty and culture of Tennessee through 15 different programs. At one upcoming First Friday event, Dogwood Arts will host a guitar design contest for budding artists to express their creativity. The contest will also help raise awareness about the upcoming Rhythm ‘N’ Blooms music festival, another favorite event among Knoxville locals.

Where to Eat

If you get hungry during First Friday, check out Curious Dog to sample unique gourmet hot dogs, including the Texan, piled high with chipotle sauce, coleslaw, BBQ sauce, and a pickle; or the Thai dog, with cabbage, carrots, mustard, cucumber, and peanut sauce. The menu also includes sandwiches, sides, and desserts. For classic Southern BBQ, visit Sweet P’s Barbecue and Downtown Dive, which is also close to the First Friday festivities. The daily special on Friday is smoked andouille sausage with two sides.

Next month, try something different with your friends and family by getting out to Downtown Knoxville and participating in the fun of First Friday.
