Your car’s dashboard lights are there for a reason; the last thing you want to do is ignore them. For those who aren’t familiar with the most common dashboard lights, here’s a handy guide that can help alert you to any impending problems.
Engine Management
Most models have a dashboard light that appears to be the outline of an engine. This is commonly referred to as the engine management light, and it means serious business. Whenever you see this light illuminate, your fuel cap might be loose, which is the best-case scenario, but it could also indicate an issue with the emissions system or malfunctioning engine part.
The best course of action whenever you see the engine light is to check to make sure the fuel cap is screwed on tightly. If that’s not the problem, contact your service center and have it seen immediately. A technician can diagnose the problem in a matter of minutes.
Engine Temperature Warning
Another dashboard light related to the engine is the temperature warning light. When your vehicle’s temperature gets too high, it runs the risk of overheating, which can destroy the engine and result in expensive damages. Whenever the engine temperature light comes on or you notice your car running hotter than normal, pull over and shut the vehicle off. You’ll want to wait about 30 minutes before popping the hood to allow the engine to cool down.
Tire Pressure
Many modern vehicles feature a tire pressure monitoring system that allows you to keep track of your tire pressure. When your car’s tire pressure is too low, the tire pressure light comes on. It typically resembles part of an oval with an exclamation point in the center. Since driving on a flat can seriously damage your vehicle’s rim, axle, and wheel, pull over immediately when this light illuminates. It’s generally more affordable to pay for a tow to the nearest service center to have the tire repaired or replaced than have you replace the axle or repair underlying damage.
Battery
Most people will recognize a car’s battery light. It’s that little rectangle with plus and minus signs on each end. When the battery light comes on, you can bet that your car is running on low power. This could mean that your battery isn’t holding a charge properly or that your alternator isn’t working. While you could purchase a replacement battery, you may want to swing by the repair shop first to have a technician test the battery, as it still may have some life left in it.
Low Oil Pressure
The low oil pressure light in your car resembles an oil can with a single drip coming out of the spot. This light indicates that your engine’s oil pressure is too low, which either means you need new oil or that you have a leak in the system. If fresh oil doesn’t take care of the problem, schedule a tuneup to have the system inspected.
