Located in World’s Fair Park at 810 Clinch Avenue, the Sunsphere is an iconic tower featuring an observation deck with 360-degree views of Knoxville and its surroundings. Open Tuesday through Sunday, this local landmark has a total height of nearly 270 feet and can be easily reached on foot from most other attractions in the downtown Knoxville area.
Constructed between 1981 and 1982, the Sunsphere was conceived as the main structure of the 1982 World’s Fair that was hosted by the city. Ever since it was completed, this observation tower has been a true symbol of Knoxville and one of the local attractions you should not miss while in town. Tickets to the observation tower cost $5 for adults aged 12 and over.
2. William Blount Mansion
Located at 200 West Hill Avenue, William Blount Mansion is an important local landmark in downtown Knoxville that was once the private residence of William Blount, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Constructed in the late 18th century, this structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and nowadays serves as a museum managed by the Blount Mansion Association.
A two-story frame and clapboard structure, William Blount Mansion has undergone a series of restoration projects throughout the years. Open to the public Wednesday through Saturday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, this place offers guided tours led by local experts who can tell you all about the different artifacts and exhibits on display.
3. Museum of East Tennessee History
Managed by the East Tennessee Historical Society and located at 601 South Gay Street, the Museum of East Tennessee History is a wonderful spot to visit and learn more about the historical events that have shaped the city throughout the years. Featuring memorabilia from the Appalachian Expeditions, as well as artifacts owned by John Sevier and Davy Crockett, this place is open to the public every day of the week.
